Webster, Massachusetts
Lily Pond in Southern Mass., near the Thompson, Connecticut border, seems more of a lake than a pond. It is not very accessible because of the narrow roads and tightly spaced cottages. It's probably a great place to live if you want small roads to walk along, and you like all your neighbors close, but for people who prefer open space the shore of this pond is too densely populated. The pond was completely covered over with ice and a coating of pristine snow, and on one of the roads leading in from the main thoroughfare we saw a very pretty marsh area that was also covered with a smooth blanket of undisturbed snow.

Union, Connecticut
Information printed on trail maps reads; "Nipmuck State Forest and Bigelow Hollow State Park...lie within one of the largest unbroken forest areas in Eastern Connecticut". Snow covering the forest floor and ice covering the ponds and brooks, along with a good chill in the air, made for an exhilarating outdoor experience. This forest made me feel like I was truly out in the wilderness. Ice fisherman were braving the cold out on Mashapaug Pond.

East Beach State Park, Rhode Island
East Beach State Park is a very thin strip of land that sits between Ninigret Pond and the Block Island Sound on the Southern Rhode Island coast. The access road into the park is a craggy dirt track that runs between bleached cottages, low dunes and tall beach grass. Access to the beach is a wide sandy path between two quintessential ragged fences common to many New England beach trails. We were totally alone as we walked the long, smooth beach under gray skies and a weak January sun. We walked along the sand but passed over many patches of snow that lay just beyond the reach of the calm surf.

About Me
- Snow Day
- Hi, and welcome to my blog! In my working life I'm a cook, and in my personal life I'm married and have two daughters, plus a Chihuahua named Minnie. I am also a culinary school graduate with a degree in pastry arts. When I have a day off the first thing I think about is getting my camera and hitting the road. I've always loved road trips and I've been carrying a camera since I got a 110 Instamatic for my birthday when I was a kid. So, we get in the car and travel all over seeking out new back roads and new places to visit. At least twice a year we head up to the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont and take in some of the best scenery New England has to offer, and we get to New Hampshire, too. We also do some shorter trips to Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and sometimes even New York state (although it's not in New England) and once in a blue moon, we get to Maine. When I'm not on the road I'm right here at home reading, writing, watching some classic television like Andy Griffith, or Minnie and I are out strolling in the cemeteries enjoying the art and remembering the people.
